1. Educational Preparation
The high school diploma track includes core subjects: math, science, English, and social studies. The student earns credits toward high school graduation, plus electives and other requirements for a high school diploma in the State of Utah. In addition, each student is assigned an admissions counselor to help the student apply for acceptance into the college or university of their choice.
Families are encouraged to consult their child’s therapist and educational advisor before selecting an academic track. Both tracks are designed to prepare the student for future career goals, including higher education.
By offering dual track learning, every student has an opportunity to experience academic success.
2. Superior Instructors
Discovery Connections teachers have an average of 25 years teaching experience and most are master’s level educators. The average tenure for teachers in the Discovery Academy and Discovery Connections programs is ten years. All teachers are licensed by the State of Utah.
3. Small Classes
Academic classes at Discovery Connections have a maximum of 12 students per class. Some classes have even less. In addition to a teacher, each class also has a student mentor. All students receive one-on-one tutoring multiple times during the school day at no additional cost to families.
4. Individualized Learning
The student, his teachers, and his therapist work side-by-side to build an academic plan that best suits that student’s unique learning style. This customizes the learning process for every child.
Discovery Connections is not a “packet” program. Our textbooks are literally cut apart and divided into chapters, or concepts. A teacher works with each student to help them master the information in each concept. Students must test on the material and pass with at least an 80% score.
While the student sets the pace, the teacher directs the learning. This provides immediate opportunities for teachers to provide remedial assistance or to challenge the student through a more advanced curriculum.
5. Academic Experiential Activities
Once each week students and staff participate in an experiential learning activity that enhances subject matter presented in the classroom. These activities may include guest speakers coming to our campus or trips to nearby areas to see first-hand scientific, cultural, or social concepts at work. Discovery Connections students have designed 3-D maps, engineered go-carts, used kites to learn aerodynamics, and explored flight with rockets made from film canisters. Each of academic experiential is designed to give students a greater insight into their studies and also to explore career possibilities.
Discovery Connections students also take advantage of the many cultural and educational opportunities unique to our location. Brigham Young University and Utah Valley University are just minutes away from our campus. Both schools provide opportunities for qualified Discovery students to participate in university coursework.
6. Integrated Clinical and Academic Progress Reporting
Educators and clinicians meet monthly to discuss each student’s academic and clinical progress. This information exchange keeps both teams of professionals apprised of any important changes in a student’s behavior or learning.
7. On-line Reporting
The Parent Portal gives families weekly access to their student’s academic progress. Grades are posted on a password-protected server. Parents can review the information and respond to the faculty or their child’s therapist with any questions, concerns or comments.
8. Special Education
Discovery Connections offers comprehensive academic services for students who qualify for individualized instruction due to mild/moderate learning disabilities, ADHD, emotional disturbances, behavioral disorders, processing disorders, executive functioning disorders, and other learning challenges.
We create a Student Academic Plan that meets the Utah State Core Curriculum requirements for graduation. Our faculty is also trained to facilitate student needs based on an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), 504 Plan, or recommendations from psychological evaluation.
Our faculty includes a licensed special education teacher, a special education coordinator, and academic counselors.
Discovery Connections has the unique capability of being flexible for each student’s specific learning challenges. Students pursue their educational goals in a comfortable, safe setting which empowers them to more fully develop their individuality and unique skills.
